A green library
The new Wallsend District Library is a leader in environmentally sustainable development.
The library has been included in Council’s ECOSTAR™ program which aims to implement and promote sustainable energy and resource use at Council owned facilities.
The ECOSTAR™ elements that have been included in the library include:
- AAA Taps & Dual Flush - AAA basin taps ensure minimal water wastage and 3 litre - 6 litre dual flush toilets will cut water used in flushing by up to 50%
- Smart Lighting – Energy smart light fittings are installed with lighting in the main area being controlled by the automatic C-BUS lighting control system. Lighting in other areas are controlled by push button intelligent time controllers. All windows provide access for natural light and are double glazed with smart glass which keeps the heat out in summer and retains it in winter
- Smart Heating & Cooling – The library’s air handling system has an econo-cycle allowing the building to draw in 100% fresh air with no need for additional heating or cooling for between 40% and 50% of the year. At times when outside air temperatures allow the econo-cycle system to function, power consumption of the air conditioning system is reduced by up to 80%
- Smart Hot Water – Hot water for hand basins and staff showers is heated by a 5.5 star instantaneous gas system. All auto boil units used for tea and coffee will be controlled by push button timers
- Waste Recycling – Paper and waste recycling facilities are provided throughout the facility
- Water Harvest & Reuse – On site storm water retention will provide water for toilet flushing and nature strip irrigation. The operation of this system will also provide a great learning opportunity.
